Position: CML Advocates Network Executive Director

Location: Europe

Full-time (100%) position

The Leukemia Patient Advocates Foundation, a Swiss-based globally operating non-profit patient advocacy organization, formally hosts the CML Advocates Network. This is an active network specifically for leaders of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) patient groups, connecting 122 patient organisations in 92 countries on all continents. It was set-up and is run by CML patients and carers. Its aim is to facilitate and support best practice sharing among patient advocates across the world.

 

About the CML Advocates Network

The CML Advocates Network was founded in 2007 by four patient groups from Germany, UK, Czech Republic and Israel and today currently represents 122 member organisations from 92 countries, being one of the largest global rare cancer patient networks. 

It is run independently by CML patients and carers and hosted by the patient-run, non-profit Leukemia Patient Advocates Foundation based in Switzerland. It is governed by its global CML Steering Committee, composed of six CML patient advocates, elected by the six world regions, plus the three co-founders of the network which are trustees of the Foundation. Day to day operations and projects are currently run by two Programme Managers and by contractors for specific tasks. More information: cmladvocates.net

 

About the role

The Executive Director is a new role as the management leader of the CML Advocates Network, which was so far provided by the Steering Committee members collectively. The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall management, implementation of programmes and projects, administration and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include financial planning, fundraising, communications, membership management and outreach to the wider community and other stakeholders. The position will report directly to the CML Advocates Network Steering Committee, specifically its chair and treasurer. Staff and contractors report to the Executive Director. The Executive Director will be working from her/his home office in Europe. 

 

General responsibilities

 

1. Board Governance: Works with the CML Advocates Network Steering Committee in order to fulfil the organization’s mission.

 

  1. Responsible for leading the CML Advocates Network, supporting and guiding the organization’s mission, strategy and priorities, as defined by the CML Advocates Network Steering Committee.
  2. Responsible for communicating effectively with the Steering Committee and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Steering Committee to function properly and to make informed decisions.
  3. Responsible for providing sufficient support for the Board to ensure good governance of the organisation.

 

2. Financial Performance and Viability: Develops and oversees resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.

  1. Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the CML Advocates Network to include submission to the Steering Committee of a proposed annual budget and quarterly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the network.
  2. Responsible for budget planning and financial management, ensuring that all projects and activities operate within the approved budget. Ensures maximum resource utilization and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
  3. Responsible for fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support the CML Advocates Network’s mission and to accomplish significant program goals.
  4. Ensures the legal and fiscal requirements of the Swiss foundation are being met.

 

3. Strategy and Operations within the Organisation’s Mission: Ensure implementation of all projects and initiatives based on the strategy developed by and with the CML Advocates Network Steering Committee to ensure that the organisation’s mission and objectives are fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, patient community outreach and liaison with key stakeholders.

  1. In close collaboration with the CML Advocates Network Steering Committee, responsible for strategic planning to ensure the CML Advocates Network can successfully fulfil its Mission and prioritizes its actions based on the strategic priorities defined by the Steering Committee.
  2. Responsible for implementation of the CML Advocates Network’s programs (ongoing projects and any other to be developed in the future) that follow the organization’s mission, developing realistic budgets and stays within them and supporting the Programme Managers driving, specifically:
  • Ensures professional implementation of all key initiatives of the network, e.g. CML Horizons conference, World CML Day, online channels, partnerships, committee memberships, partnerships, and ensures annual evaluation of their performance, impact and outreach.
  • Ensures implementation of the CML Community Advisory Boards supervised and led by the CML-CAB chairs.
  • Liaises and works the network’s member organisations and their leaders to maintain and grow the global network, liaising closely with the regions and their needs from the global network.

 

4. Organization Operations: Oversees and implements appropriate financial and human resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate and within budget.

  1. Responsible effective administration of the CML Advocates Network operations and finances.
  2. Responsible for the hiring, supervision, retention and performance management of competent, qualified staff.
  3. Responsible for signing all notes, agreements and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.
  4. Responsible for developing and maintaining partnerships with other patient organisations and stakeholders to support the strategic objectives of the network.

 

5. Organization Communications: Runs and develops internal and external communication strategy of the CML Advocates Network.

  1. Responsible for the enhancement of the CML Advocates Network’s public image by being active and visible in the patient community and other stakeholders, e.g. by working closely with other professional, public and private organizations.
  2. Responsible for maintaining and/or increase the engagement of CML Advocates Network members, volunteers and other patient advocacy groups.
  3. Responsible for liaising with members, responding to their requests and needs.
  4. Responsible for approving the annual communication plan and ensuring resources to fulfil it, including internal communication (members, CML Steering Committee, staff, contractors, work groups) as well as external communication (website, events, online and offline media).

 

Actual Job Responsibilities 

  1. Ensure professional implementation of all projects and initiatives as defined in the strategic plan, supported by the staff and contractors within the agreed budgets and timelines.
  2. Distribute responsibilities, supervise and collaborate with organization staff and contractors, supervise their workload and responsibilities, and measure their performance.
  3. Planning and supervision of the annual budget.
  4. Strategic planning in alignment with the Steering Committee.
  5. Establishing administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the Network.
  6. Oversee all communication activities and ensure consistency in its messages. Serve as the CML Advocates Network’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media and the general public.
  7. Establish and maintain relationships with various stakeholders and their organizations and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance the CML Advocates Network’s Mission and drive outreach and impact of its initiatives.
  8. Report to the chair and treasurer, and work closely with the Steering Committee to seek its involvement in strategic planning, prioritization, resource planning and communication.
  9. Organization of the Board and Steering Committee meetings.
  10. Review and approve contracts with service providers, contractors, funders and partners.
  11. Other duties as assigned by the Steering Committee.

Required qualifications and experience

  1. A university degree or equivalent education and experience, preferably but not necessarily in Law, Political Sciences, Public Health, Business Management or another related/relevant field.
  2. At least 3 years’ experience in policy and/or patient advocacy work at European and/or international level.
  3. Experience of working in the NGO sector.
  4. Experience in leading employed and/or volunteer teams.
  5. Track record in managing successful projects.
  6. Knowledge of healthcare in general and in particular in areas as access to health policy, patient advocacy, NGO communications, programme management and development and financial management.
  7. Capacity to undertake strategic plans and their implementation.
  8. Excellent English (written and verbal).
  9. Proven experience in writing reports and briefing documents.
  10. Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  11. IT literacy, including online collaboration tools for virtual teams.

Required qualities and attributes

  1. Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.
  2. Capacity to manage a complex workload, to plan and prioritise effectively, with flexibility and ability to multi-task.
  3. Capacity to run a small, busy and multicultural team by optimizing internal communication and empathy with the Steering Committee and staff.
  4. Ability to implement CML Advocates Network’s core values in daily work.
  5. Ability to dedicate all time exclusively to CML Advocates Network, i.e. not have multiple salaried positions in different organisations.

Desirable

  1. Knowledge of hematological diseases, especially in leukemias.
  2. Knowledge of health policy, human and/or patients’ rights.
  3. Understanding and awareness of clinical research.
  4. Working knowledge of other languages.

Special conditions

  1. Willingness to travel.
  2. Willingness to work unsociable hours with reasonable notice.
  3. Ability to be politically impartial in the application of duties.
