City of Berlin

Having both a large area and population, Berlin is Germany’s capital. The city is renowned for its diverse landmarks, lively cultural scene, and relaxed lifestyle. With 3.7 million inhabitants, it is the most populous city in the European Union. The city is famous for its striking contrasts. As the past and present merge, historic buildings stand alongside modern architecture. Its sights, from the Brandenburg Gate to the Chancellor’s Office, tell the story of an entire nation. As Germany’s capital, Berlin is home to all the major government buildings, including the historic Reichstag building.

The city is also full of art, artists, and museums. Its more than 170 museums showcase precious artefacts from around the world. Its three enormous opera houses and leading orchestras make Berlin a popular destination for classical music fans from around the world. Known for its parks, woods and lakes, Berlin is Germany’s greenest city.

It was at the crossroads of two key historic trade routes that Berlin established itself as the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, and Weimar Republic. Berlin played a critical role in the Enlightenment, Neoclassicism, and liberal revolution. During the roaring 1920s, Berlin was the third-largest city in the world. The devastated city was divided after World War II, when the victorious countries occupied it; West Berlin became a de facto exclave of West Germany, surrounded by the Berlin Wall. East Berlin became East German capital, Bonn became West German capital. The historic Berlin wall came down in 1989 and following Germany’s reunification, Berlin was once again the capital of Germany.
